Carpet Patching
(Replacing permanently damaged sections of carpet using carpet from your property)
When It’s Needed
Patching is used when a section of carpet is permanently damaged and cannot be repaired through other methods.
Common examples:
- Burns (iron, hair straighteners, cigarettes)
- Pet damage
- Stains that cannot be removed
- Physical damage (rips, holes, tears)
How It’s Done
We carefully remove the damaged section and replace it with a matching piece of carpet (the donor piece).
The new piece is fitted and secured to blend as naturally as possible with the surrounding area.
We always use carpet from your property for patching to ensure the closest possible match. (See Donor Carpet & Wardrobes section for full details)
Limitations
A patch is designed to blend in, but it may still be visible.
Factors that affect visibility:
- Carpet wear and fading
- Pile direction (the way the carpet fibres sit)
- Lighting conditions
- Original carpet condition
In many cases, patches are difficult to notice — but they are not always invisible.
Every repair is completed to the highest achievable standard within the limitations of the existing carpet. We will always set expectations before beginning the repair.
Outcome & Lifespan
A properly installed patch is designed to be permanent and should last as long as the surrounding carpet under normal use.
If this isn’t the case (for more worn or aged carpets), we will make this clear before beginning the repair.
Donor Carpet & Wardrobes
(How carpet is taken for patching and how those areas are restored)
When It’s Needed
When carpet is required for a patch and no spare piece is available.
How It’s Done
When carpet is taken from a wardrobe for a patch, we can supply similar carpet to relay back into the entire wardrobe or wherever the piece was taken from. This is provided as an extra cost, but pricing is all inclusive, whichever method we end up using(different methods listed below).
We always suggest taking carpet from areas where it’s divided (such as wardrobe tracks), so any difference is harder to notice.
Our goal is always to hide what’s taken as best as possible.
For smaller areas:
- We may fill the space using the damaged piece
- Or only replace exactly what was taken
We can also:
- Stretch carpet to create excess
- Use areas like steps where carpet is folded under
- Use excess tucked under skirting boards
We always ensure we don’t damage or leave the carpet in worse condition when using these methods.
Limitations
We almost never find exact matches for carpet. Even carpets with the same name and colour will vary if not from the same roll. So we always use your carpet(from somewhere in the property) for the patch itself. This guarantees the best possible match. We aim to find the closest match possible. It won’t always be exact depending on the carpet type and what’s available but we can help identify the carpet type and point you toward where it can be ordered. We don’t cover the cost of supplying exactly matched carpet because this often outweighs the repair cost but we will install it as part of the original scope.
Outcome
- The patched area gets the best possible match
- Donor areas are restored as discreetly as possible
- Differences are usually hidden in less visible areas
Underlay Replacement
(Replacing missing or damaged underlay)
When It’s Needed
A lot of times when the carpet is damaged, the underlay is also removed or affected, or new underlay is requested.
How It’s Done
We will supply underlay to fill in the repaired area. We generally carry a standard thickness underlay to fill small spots.
Limitations
We don’t always have the exact thickness. So can be a slight raise or lowering in the replaced area
This is more often felt when walking over it rather than seen.
If this is too noticeable
We can take underlay from somewhere less prominent (like the corner of a room). Swap it into the repair area. Then use the mismatched piece in the less visible area or alternatively, if we are provided photos of the existing underlay, we can provide a closer thickness match. Most times, the area is small enough that any misalignment isn’t noticeable.
Outcome
Functional underlay replacement that supports the repaired carpet area, with minimal noticeable difference in most cases.
Carpet Stretching
(Re-tightening loose carpet to remove ripples and improve safety and appearance)
When It’s Needed
Stretching is used when carpet has become loose and developed ripples.
Common causes:
- General wear over time
- Poor original installation
- Heavy traffic areas
- Heavy furniture movement
How It’s Done
We re-tension the carpet using knee kickers or power stretching, depending on the type of carpet or room size.
We pull it tight, cut off excess if needed, and re-secure it to the edges of the room.
Limitations
Markings may remain where ripples were. These are more common when ripples have been present for longer. Regular vacuuming or a professional clean will improve this.
Delamination occurs when the backing separates from the carpet which can cause rippling. Improvement varies depending on severity and extremely worn areas may not fully improve
Outcome & Lifespan
- Noticeably flatter, safer carpet
- Improved overall appearance
- Long-term solution when done correctly
Results depend on age and condition of the carpet but more often that not, there will always be a significant improvement
Furniture Handling (Stretching)
(Managing furniture to allow proper carpet stretching)
When It’s Needed
When furniture prevents proper access for stretching.
How It’s Done
We can do a walkthrough and identify what needs to be moved and move furniture if needed (extra charge), but only what’s necessary.
Limitations
Results won’t match full furniture removal so we recommend clearing the area beforehand for best results.
Outcome
- Significant improvement even with partial access
- Best results when area is cleared
Rejoining Carpet
(Repairing damaged joins or removing excess carpet from stretching)
When It’s Needed
- Damaged join
- Pulled thread along a join
- During re-stretching
How It’s Done
We cut the damaged section, remove affected material, and rejoin the carpet. For stretching it follows the same logic but we just cut off excess carpet
Limitations
Repaired joins may be more visible than the original join
Outcome
Improves the structure and appearance of the join, if it was previously damaged. Or allows us to remove excess carpet that has formed in an area.
Smooth Edge Installation
(Installing or replacing edge gripper)
When It’s Needed
When smooth edge is damaged, missing, or needed for new walls/doorways
How It’s Done
It’s installed around the room to secure the carpet. Usually nailed and sometimes glued.
Limitations
Door clearance
When installing smooth edge in a doorway, if the door has been installed too low to the ground, it may not be able to close or slide shut properly. This requires the bottom of the door to be sanded back (not a service we provide). There are no alternatives that can be done with the carpet or smooth edge itself without sacrificing appearance and longevity of the area. We will try to let you know beforehand if we believe this will happen.
Joins on smooth edge
When new flooring has been installed and we have to install carpet up to it, there may already be a join where the carpet was previously connected. When a join sits on the smooth edge this can cause, a small lump or protrusion and some stiffness in the area. This is because joins are not supposed to sit directly on smooth edge.
A better alternative is to have new flooring installers avoid placing flooring directly over joins where possible. But we will still make the installation the best it can be if that’s not possible.
Outcome
Clean finish along other flooring or walls.
Transition Repairs & Installations
(Installing transitions for edges and doorways)
When It’s Needed
When carpet meets another flooring type and/or needs protection.
How It’s Done
We install cover strips (metal with plastic insert).
- Prevent fraying
- Improve longevity
- Remove damage along edge
Other transitions can be requested and discussed.
Outcome
Cleaner finish and improved durability.
Mould Repairs
(Removing and replacing mould-affected carpet materials, also see Patching, Donor Carpet & Wardrobes and Underlay Replacement for related details)
When It’s Needed
When mould affects carpet, underlay, or smooth edge.
How It’s Done
We remove rotted or mouldy materials and replace:
- Carpet
- Underlay
- Smooth edge
This is based on what is visibly affected.
Limitations
We can’t guarantee complete mould removal:
- We are not liable for the cause of the mould
- The source of the mould should be addressed beforehand
- This usually requires waterproofing or sealing leaks
Outcome
Removal of visible mould-affected materials and reinstatement of the carpet area.
Minor Pull Repairs
(Repairing small damage like pulled threads or minor wear)
When It’s Needed
When there’s pulled threads (pets, vacuums etc)
How It’s Done
Smaller damage we trim and cut back, sometimes glueing in small threads if it’s noticeable after trimming. For larger damage we’ll remove a small section of threads and either glue or join in some new ones.
New fibres are usually taken from a wardrobe, any spare carpet that’s available or even the trimmings we cut off. Often such a small amount is needed that removal isn’t noticeable but pieces can filled in if needed(See Donar Carpet and Wardrobes).
Limitations
Slightly more noticeable than original condition(before damage).
Outcome
Cleaner, more uniform appearance and prevention of further damage.
Pricing
- Pricing is all inclusive unless discussed before work is done
- Based on result, not method used
- Fully encompasses making donor areas discreet(when included in original quote) rather than being based on just the supply of carpet
Warranty
- Repairs/patching: 2-year warranty or life of carpet
- Full re-stretch: 5-year warranty or life of carpet
For older carpets, warranty reflects remaining lifespan and will be explained beforehand.
Important Expectations
Carpet repair is a specialised trade, not a manufacturing process. Sometimes we have to think outside the box when there’s certain limitations, we do this based on our experience and knowledge of what does and doesn’t work. You’ll be made aware of any drawbacks or things we’ve opted to do that aren’t usually the standard if we have no other option.
- Results vary
- Most repairs significantly improve the issue
- Some repairs may still be slightly visible
