How Burn Marks Are Repaired

Carpet burns are one of the most common types of damage and they happen way faster than people realise. Each type of carpet has a different reaction to heat, and conversely, each can be repaired differently.

Natural Fibres (Wool)

Wool and natural fibres char when exposed to heat, usually leaving the surface of the threads blackened and hard. If the heat source — an iron, incense, or hair straightener — is quickly picked up, the burn can often be repaired by essentially “scraping” it off. This means removing the surface layer of the fibres until the charred area is no longer visible.

At Express Carpet Repairs, we use a pumice stone and a long blade to slowly shave away the damaged fibres. This method works well for plush carpet but is far less effective for loop pile. It’s risky work — there’s potential to cut directly into the backing or remove too many fibres, making the area more noticeable. It’s a balance of removing just enough damaged material without overdoing it. We also shave the surrounding area to create a smooth transition, so there’s no obvious gap where the burn was.

Synthetic Carpets

Synthetic carpets burn quickly, though the severity depends on the specific type. The three most common are:

  • Polypropylene has the lowest melting point at 160°C and is common in rentals. Customers often say they picked up the heat source “straight away,” but unfortunately it only takes 1-2 seconds for substantial damage to form with this type.
  • Nylon has the highest melting point at around 260°C, so it can withstand more heat before substantial damage occurs. The “shave” method can still work for nylon burns.
  • Polyester sits in the middle, with a melting point of 220-240°C.

Regardless of the synthetic type, if the burn goes too deep, shaving won’t work — patching is the only option.

When Patching Is Needed

Patching is when we cut out the burnt area and install a new piece in its place. It sounds simple — cut and paste — but it requires very expensive tools and years of experience. The process involves matching the pattern, ensuring the carpet is running the same direction, making sure all cuts are straight and follow the same thread, cutting in a way that prevents fraying, and finally joining the seams with tape that bonds to the surrounding carpet. Every step has to be done perfectly to achieve a seamless result.
