One of carpet’s natural tendencies is fraying and tearing threads. Whether it’s in a doorway or through a room. From general wear, from pets, or at joins in the carpet where it’s not as secure, the problem is the same. But there are preventative measures and solid ways to repair it.
Why Loop Pile Carpets Fray
Most, if not all times, loop pile carpets are the ones that fray. This is because of the way they’re designed, they’re literally looped together/to the backing, so something just needs to get under that loop and damage shows itself. Not only that, but the threads easily collapse into themselves when tucked along edges, which often begins the process of edges fraying.
Where Fraying Happens Most
Generally, we see fraying and pulled threads most in doorways due to joins lifting over time, eventually leading to the threads letting go. This can be from heavy foot traffic, intense vacuuming, how the joins were installed originally, or just the age of the carpet and it wearing down, often a combination of everything. If the doorway leads to a different type of flooring, this can be just as bad due to threads collapsing or a poor install.
Repair Methods for Doorways
There are a few ways we can repair doorway fraying. If the fraying is only a small amount into the room with just a few threads damaged, we can stretch the carpet to create excess or oftentimes just enough to re-secure along the edging.
We can also use what’s called a cover strip. This goes in the doorway and covers a small amount of the carpet along the edge. This generally will stop any fraying from happening as it covers the edge of the carpet. Everyone has different preferences on what they want the doorway to look like, so it’s a case-by-case basis for this method.
If the fraying has come too far into the room, we’ll need to patch it. This means cutting out the damaged area, installing a new piece, making sure the pattern matches, the sizing is right, and the joining is as seamless as possible.
Repair Methods for Joins
When it comes to joins, whether in a doorway or throughout a room — we have a few different methods. If it’s big enough, we’ll usually patch it, cutting out a slightly larger section so we have more space to work with and can make it properly secure.
In other cases, we can cut open the entire join and stretch it from both sides to close the gap that the fraying created. If it’s minor damage, maybe one or two loose threads — we can often just glue where the threads have lifted and re-stick them so they secure back in place.
Prevention Strategies
To prevent this from happening, you need to be careful around joins, as carpets are much more fragile in these spots. Putting office chairs or anything with heavy movement directly on joins is usually bound to end up with damage.
Cover strips are one of the best preventative measures for doorways. And if you’re already in the process of replacing your carpet, consider getting plush pile instead if you have pets or high foot traffic. Plush pile will avoid a lot of the damage and repairs that loop pile is prone to.
